Kelly Bensimon’s 10 Wildest Moments on RHONY

Kelly Bensimon came to The Real Housewives of New York City with a very specific energy. She was beautiful, wealthy, occasionally philosophical, and seemingly operating on a completely different frequency from everyone around her. Then came Scary Island, and Kelly went from eccentric Housewife to one of the most unforgettable characters in Housewives history.

Here are 10 of her wildest moments.

1. The Entire Scary Island Meltdown

It is impossible to make a Kelly Bensimon list without starting here. Kelly arrived in St. John already convinced the other women were against her, and things only became stranger as the trip continued. She cried, accused Bethenny of trying to kill her, called Alex McCord a vampire, talked about Gwyneth Paltrow, yelled “Al Sharpton!” and wandered around eating jelly beans. It was less a conversation and more a stream of consciousness with tropical cocktails.

2. “Satchels of Gold”

Kelly tried to explain something to Bethenny on the beach and suddenly started talking about “satchels of gold.” Nobody seemed to know what she was talking about, including, possibly, Kelly herself. It remains one of those Housewives phrases that makes absolutely no sense but has somehow survived in the Bravo lexicon.

3. “Al Sharpton!”

During the Scary Island dinner, Kelly suddenly started yelling “Al Sharpton!” while arguing with Bethenny. There was no obvious reason for Al Sharpton to be involved in this particular argument, which is exactly what made it so spectacular. The conversation had officially left the building.

4. Alex McCord Is a Vampire

Kelly looked at Alex McCord and decided that she looked like a vampire. Not metaphorically. Not “you look pale.” A vampire. Alex was sitting there trying to participate in an argument while Kelly had apparently decided she was dealing with a supernatural creature.

5. The Jelly Beans

At the height of the Scary Island chaos, Kelly returned to the table with jelly beans and started eating them while everyone else was trying to figure out what was happening. She also offered them to the other women. Nothing says “let’s calmly resolve our differences” quite like handing your furious castmates a handful of candy.

6. Bethenny Is Trying to Kill Her

Kelly became convinced that Bethenny was trying to kill her. She described dreams in which Bethenny was attempting to murder her and seemed genuinely frightened by the idea. Bethenny, meanwhile, was essentially watching Kelly unravel in real time and eventually reached her famous “GO TO SLEEP!” breaking point.

7. “I’m Here by Myself. I’m Alone on Scary Island.”

Kelly actually gave Scary Island its name. In a confessional, she declared that she was alone on Scary Island with no friends. The line became the perfect description for an already completely bizarre Housewives vacation.

8. Calling Bethenny a “Ho-Bag”

Kelly and Bethenny were already going at each other when Kelly decided to call Bethenny a “ho-bag.” Bethenny was understandably not thrilled with this assessment, and what could have been a quick insult turned into yet another completely bizarre Kelly-versus-Bethenny confrontation. Kelly had a remarkable ability to throw out an insult and then somehow make the resulting argument even more confusing.

9. The “Breakthrough, Not Breakdown”

After the Scary Island chaos, Kelly insisted that she had experienced a breakthrough rather than a breakdown. That distinction became one of the most memorable parts of the entire saga. Whatever you call it, nobody watching at home was prepared for what had just happened.

10. The Reunion Where Everyone Tried to Figure Out What Just Happened

Even after the trip was over, the Scary Island situation followed Kelly to the reunion. The women were still trying to understand what had happened, while Kelly maintained her own version of events. At that point, Scary Island had become less of an episode and more of a permanent piece of Housewives history.

Kelly Bensimon only appeared on RHONY for a relatively short time, but she left behind enough bizarre quotes, accusations, jelly beans and supernatural observations to fill several Housewives careers. Scary Island remains one of Bravo’s most famous cast trips—and Kelly remains the reason it has that name.
