RHOC, Season 20, Episode 2–Not My Bingo Card

Twenty seasons into the Orange County fossil record, and these women are still finding new ways to turn a simple friendship into a geological disaster. This week, Emily Simpson turns 50, Gina throws her a drag-bingo birthday brunch, Carmella Garcia’s complicated personal life becomes the group’s newest field of study, and Heather Dubrow discovers that when you tell people you put them in boxes, they may eventually ask to see the box.

Meanwhile, Shannon Beador is attempting a bungee workout, which is less a fitness class and more an episode of When Dinosaurs Lose Control of Their Limbs.

The ladies gather for the workout, and Shannon is immediately giving us the physical comedy that has made her one of the greats. She is flailing around like a baby dinosaur whose legs have not yet received the instructions from its brain. The bungee cords are winning. The trainer is trying. Shannon is simply doing her best to remain attached to the planet.

Gina reveals that she’s planning a surprise 50th birthday party for Emily, complete with drag bingo and an old-lady dress code. Because nothing says “happy birthday” quite like dressing your friend as a senior citizen while she’s still young enough to have a functioning metabolism.

The women also return to the Heather-and-Tamra situation from last week’s party. Jennifer has told Tamra that Heather described her as being “in a box,” and now everyone is wondering whether Heather’s friendship with Tamra is genuine or simply a carefully curated display item in the Dubrow friendship museum.

Heather, meanwhile, is not thrilled with Jennifer. She feels Jennifer has repeated private conversations and caused unnecessary trouble. Jennifer insists she was trying to help. It’s the classic Housewives friendship problem: one dinosaur tells another dinosaur something in confidence, the second dinosaur tells a third dinosaur, and suddenly the entire herd is screaming about who said what.

Emily and Shane are doing publicity photos for their podcast, ’Til Death Do Us Part. Emily is still irritated that Tamra criticized the podcast at the reunion and suggested Emily was ungrateful for the platform Tamra and Teddi Mellencamp gave her.

Tamra apparently believes that if you give someone a microphone, they owe you a public thank-you. Emily believes that if the podcast is making money, maybe the platform is doing just fine.

Shane, in a rare moment of strategic brilliance, suggests that Emily send Tamra a thank-you card. It’s so simple that it almost feels like cheating. A card! A little stationery! A way to close the loop without requiring a full season of podcast-related warfare.

Meanwhile, Heather meets Tamra for dinner to discuss the friendship box. Heather explains that she can love Tamra while not loving every single thing Tamra does. This is, technically, how friendship works. You can adore someone and still occasionally want to put their behavior in a soundproof storage unit.

Tamra hears this and concludes that Heather doesn’t really like her. She says Heather talks about her like she’s a serial killer. Which is a dramatic leap, even for a woman who has made a career out of dramatic leaps.

Heather admits that she puts people in boxes because everyone has different relationships with everyone else. She also explains that Tamra can be scary sometimes, and that she has sometimes held back from saying things directly to her.

Well, there it is. Heather has a friendship filing system, and Tamra has discovered she’s been categorized under “Potentially Volatile, Handle With Care.”

Tamra asks Heather not to discuss her with the other women. Heather agrees. The friendship is not exactly healed, but at least the box has a lid now.

Vicki, meanwhile, visits Tamra and gives her own assessment of Heather. Vicki thinks Heather is a surface friend and insists that she—not Heather—is the leader of the pack. It’s Vicki Gunvalson, so naturally a conversation about friendship becomes a territorial dispute over who gets to sit on the throne.

Vicki also reveals that she recently ran into her ex-husband Donn. The encounter stirred up old feelings, and she admits she wanted to hug and kiss him and tell him she was sorry she divorced him.

Unfortunately, her current boyfriend Michael was standing right there.

There are many ways to introduce your boyfriend to the ghosts of your romantic past. This is certainly one of them.

Shannon meets Carmella at a boutique, and the two hit it off. Carmella has a complicated history: she married former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia when she was 21, they never legally divorced, and she has four children. She also has a live-in boyfriend, Danny, with whom she has been navigating a rebuilding-trust situation after infidelity.

Carmella’s life is a complicated arrangement of relationships, family logistics, and emotional loose ends. Shannon seems interested in getting to know her, while Vicki is already preparing to conduct a full background investigation.

Carmella also shares her past as a Playboy Playmate of the Year and WWE performer. She recalls leaving a Halloween party with Leonardo DiCaprio when she was younger. She didn’t sleep with him, she says, but she probably should have.

Somewhere in Hollywood, Leo is presumably still trying to remember which year he was allowed to date a woman who could rent a car.

Carmella has four children, a husband she is still legally married to, a boyfriend, and a complicated custody arrangement. She’s not exactly entering the OC as a blank slate. She’s arriving with a whole fossilized ecosystem of her own.

And now, it’s time for Emily’s birthday.

The women arrive at the drag-bingo brunch dressed as old ladies. Tamra goes all in, wearing a leopard-print coat and an adult diaper, with absolutely no pants to speak of. Vicki arrives with curlers, slippers, and a walker. Jenn has giant curlers. Shannon looks like she’s headed to a very confusing funeral. Heather, naturally, refuses to make herself ugly and opts for a gray wig that looks like it cost more than everyone else’s entire costume budget.

Carmella arrives in a floral dress with a cane, which is technically on theme but lacks the commitment of a woman who has put herself in a diaper for the sake of a birthday brunch.

The group plays bingo, and then the party turns into an interrogation about Carmella’s love life. She explains that she’s been dating Danny on and off for years and is trying to rebuild trust after he cheated. She says she loves him and believes he’s changing, but she’s still struggling to get past what happened.

Vicki is not particularly sympathetic. She immediately wonders how the children will be affected by the arrangement. And because this is Vicki, the concern arrives with the subtlety of a T-rex stepping on a picnic.

Carmella’s ring also becomes a topic of conversation. She explains that it was a gift from her husband after he cheated. She found out about the infidelity when he left his iPad out. A modern-day discovery method for a modern-day dinosaur: no private investigator, no suspicious lipstick, just an unattended tablet and a woman who knows how to read.

The party continues, and the ladies start to clear the air. Jennifer apologizes to Heather for repeating the conversation about Tamra. Heather maintains that Jennifer was the one who kept bringing Tamra up. It’s an apology with a side of “but you made me do it,” which is a very popular species in the Housewives habitat.

And then Emily and Tamra finally resolve their podcast fight. Tamra apologizes for talking negatively about Emily’s podcast. Emily acknowledges the platform and says she’s grateful for the boost. The thank-you-card strategy has worked. Shane Simpson, the quiet strategist of the season, may have just saved the franchise from another six episodes of podcast drama.

Emily is 50. The women are dressed like the Golden Girls. The podcast feud is over. Heather and Tamra have agreed to stop discussing each other with the herd, at least for now. Vicki is still convinced she’s the leader of the pack. Carmella’s personal life is a tangled ball of yarn that the entire cast is now trying to bat around.

And the dinosaurs are still fighting over the same old bones.

The only real difference is that this time, the bones are wearing curlers and an adult diaper.
