Bethenny Getting Married, Season 1, Episode 1–Mi Casa, Su Casa

Welcome to the next chapter of Bethenny Frankel’s life, where marriage, motherhood, and a rapidly expanding business empire are all happening simultaneously. Because apparently having one major life event at a time is for people who aren’t Bethenny.

Bethenny is engaged to Jason Hoppy, pregnant with their first child, and still building her Skinnygirl business. She’s also preparing for a wedding, managing her staff, and attempting to maintain some semblance of a normal life. Good luck with that.

First up, Bethenny gets the opportunity to walk in a fashion show, which is particularly exciting because she gets to show off her baby bump. Bethenny is thrilled to be back in the spotlight, although it’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which Bethenny Frankel isn’t in the spotlight. The woman could probably make a trip to the grocery store into a press event.

Meanwhile, Jason has housewarming party plans. The couple’s different approaches to life are already becoming apparent. Bethenny operates at approximately 900 miles per hour, while Jason seems to prefer a more relaxed pace. This may become a recurring theme.

Over at the office, Bethenny’s business is growing, and assistant Julie is apparently carrying enough responsibilities for three people. Bethenny decides it’s time to hire another assistant and floats the idea of a male personal assistant. Jason has some opinions about the job requirements, because apparently even hiring an assistant is going to require a relationship summit.

Bethenny also takes a step toward addressing her complicated past by beginning therapy. She opens up about the difficult experiences that have shaped her, including her troubled family relationships. Beneath the quick comebacks and relentless work ethic, there’s clearly a lot going on that Bethenny hasn’t fully dealt with. It’s a more vulnerable side of her than we usually get to see on Housewives.

Back at home, the housewarming party is approaching, and Bethenny and Jason have another disagreement about how things should be handled. The differences between them aren’t exactly subtle. Bethenny likes control, organization, and knowing what’s happening. Jason seems to believe that things will work themselves out eventually. Two very different operating systems, sharing one apartment.

And then there’s the actual housewarming party. Bethenny has guests arriving, including familiar Housewives faces Alex McCord and Simon van Kempen. There’s just one problem: Jason is nowhere to be found. He’s stuck in a snowstorm and can’t make it home for his own party.

Because naturally, the man hosting the housewarming party is not actually available to attend it.

Bethenny manages to keep things moving, but it’s another reminder that her life is about to become a whole lot more complicated. Between the business, the baby, the wedding, and the relationship adjustments, there’s no shortage of material.

The episode wraps with Bethenny and Jason making up and heading out to look at wedding bands. A little romance after a healthy dose of domestic friction.

And so begins the great Bethenny and Jason experiment: one very driven New Yorker, one considerably more laid-back fiancé, a baby on the way, and an awful lot of wedding planning ahead.

Strap in. This marriage is going to need more than a wedding planner.
